It’s March, So Where’s My SHOWCASE?

It’s that time of year when NCCBOR members start to think about SHOWCASE or don’t.  There are a number of NCCBOR members that have never been to a SHOWCASE in its 23 year history.  You probably couldn’t get those people there if you paid them but those folks are probably not reading a blog on this website either. From my best information NCCBOR SHOWCASE was created in 1989.  The SHOWCASE AD HOC Committee was chaired by Buddy West and included Shirley Kalvinsky, Richard Lynch, Paul Enderle, Sal Sedita, Brad Bugher and Bobbi Albright. NCCBOR membership census was 2300, booths were… Read more »

Evolution…Adapt or Become Extinct!

Last week our 2012 President, Eric Braunstein, told me a story. It seems that Eric had an opportunity to visit the Philadelphia Natural History Museum. As he stood looking at the dinosaur bones he started thinkling about how these big powerful creatures became extinct. He pondered the subject and remembered reading Darwin’s “Origins of Species”.  That book had a profound effect on him. Evolution! How did Darwin figure it out? Eric thought of the dinosaurs who could not evolve so as to resist cosmic events and the ice age.  And that made him think of the little rodents, small in size but who could grow hair to stay warm hide underground… Read more »

Got Communication?

It’s that time of year when we think we should make a New Year’s resolution.  I try to kill the proverbial two birds with one stone with resolutions.  Maybe I will walk to work to save money on gas and lose a few pounds in the process type promises. But this year it is all about communication.  I want to be understood and understand.  And I suggest to my readers that improving your communication skills will make you more money, less enemies and just might help you lose those unwanted pounds. HA! Communication is changing.  Whether it’s business or social,… Read more »

It Was the Worst of Times; It Was the Best of Times

There is a lot being said about the state of our economy, the motivation and intelligence of our elected leadership in Washington, about the morality and accountability of our corporate and banking institutions and even about the basic fabric of America these days.  Have we lost it?  I dare say the Occupy (you name the place) Movement seems to think so.  They just can’t define the “it” part of the tagline.  Being close to the real estate business, I have the tendency to focus on the stuff that makes it move and shake and shutter and roll too.  The news… Read more »

Have You Heard that Rumor?

You know the rumor…that Zillow is taking over the real estate industry or that the web is driving REALTORS® into extinction or that Associations and Boards of REALTORS® have out grown their usefulness.  As a REALTOR® Association Executive I take special exception to that last one (I guess I would).  A statement like that tells me the speaker lacks the understanding, history and function of trade associations in general.  Let’s look at the real estate industry and REALTORS® specifically.  Now how about our Code of Ethics?  That one document alone is worth the price of admission for our members.  Our Code… Read more »

Just Act Like a Rugby Player

Did you see The Wall Street Journal article that read “Rugby Star Gets General Motors Out of a Scrum” (http://tinyurl.com/26rfmbw). It describes a $23 billion offering spanning three continents, 35 underwriting banks, and 90 promotional meetings to satisfy the U.S. government which was GM’s largest shareholder.  The entire task was guided by their CFO Christopher Liddell   Liddell is a long-time rugby player.  Some of my readers might know that rugby is a passion of mine. The fact is I am totally enamored with the game that was adapted creatively in England in the early 1800’s.  William Webb Ellis is often credited… Read more »

What’s Next & Who’s Watching?

Whether you are a Buyer, a Seller, a REALTOR®, a Doctor or none of the above, I hope you are thinking about how things will be VS how they are now or even more nostalgically about how they were yesterday!  This fact might be uncivilized, humorous or distressing to you but it is estimated right now that more people in this world have a mobile phone (5.3 Billion) than have a tooth brush (4.2 Billion).  That’s right 70% of the world has a mobile phone!  Sure most are old flip phones but who’s watching? Well, no matter how you look at it, we… Read more »

What we want; What they need

As the CEO of the Board of REALTORS®, I get phone calls every day about lots of things.  Often times I can relate to that prayer that asks us to change what we can, endure what we cannot change and try to know the difference between the two.  Some issues are about what has been done (or not) by my REALTOR®  members to their clients, the public or their fellow REALTORS®…and sometimes the call is all about , “if it could only be done a little better, the entire system would work better.” The system I refer to is the… Read more »
